self service

having watched my dealer service my sportster 3 times @ $500 a go - i decided that now the boat is out of warranty i would service it myself and save some cash... - i have a reasonably well equipped garage, i only had to buy E10 & E8 TORX sockets and an oil extractor - all went well until it came to putting the sparks plugs back in (remembering to remove the nipples!) one of the plugs snapped at the thread in the cylinder head - #*!# - up until this point i was ok - now i was facing a long drive to my nearest dealer and an expensive bill to remove the thread of a busted plug ( THE NUT AND PORCELAIN HAD ALL COME OUT)
i was now out of my depth - having spoke to my delaer he said get an ezout tool and take the rocker cover off - which seemed a little hard to me - but twenty minutes later and the busted plug is out - the tools cost me $50 the parts cost $40 so i saved $400 ish
2 sleepless nites thinking i had killed my boat!

off waranty servicing

now that my boat is out f warranty - i have decided to do the servicing myself, well as far as changing the oil, filter and plugs - have all the necessary tools and oil extractor - anybody got any tips?
also is it easy to check the torque setting on the supercharger clutch - i gather its just take the air intake off and then put a torque wrench on the shaft? if it is this easy, what settings should you use or look for?
any help appreciated

water in board
17 June 2008 - 04:08 AM
everytime we come back to the slipway i always watch how much water comes out of the drain holes when i take them out, generally not much, but recently there has been much more - anyway not sure where the water is coming in from - exhause seals ok - have lifted out locker with engine running and checked all hoses - doesnt seem to be any water coming in from anywhere on the exhaust cooling side - any water that comes on board from the sea into the floor goes out through the scupper valve in the floor - always seems to be quite a bit draining out - yet bilge pump never switches on - although i have deliberately over filled with fresh water to check it works - confused - any ideas?
because we boat in salt water i always flush the engine inside and out with lots of fresh water and then spray with lube when its cool to prevent corrosion.
