Rick,I just came back yesterday from a weekend on a friend's lake. On my post inspection of my engine I noticed I couldn't see the normal green coolant level in the expansion tank. On further inspection I noticed oil sludge in the area of the coolant tank overflow tube. I slowly opened the coolant tank and found oil in the coolant. I checked the oil and the level was pretty low but there was no moisture in the oil. I haven't contacted the dealer yet because they are closed on Mondays. It is under an extended warranty that I purchased for those just in case situations. The boat was running great, no lights indicating that anything was wrong. Has anyone else experienced this problem before? I've had the boat at the dealer once before for high coolant level but they just sucked some out and told me there was nothing wrong with it. I guess they were wrong. Any comments would be appreciated. The boat is a '05 Sportster SCIC with about 40 hours on it.
Hopefully its just a cracked head gasket. Could be a cracked head or block though. In any case, you were smart in buying the extended warranty as I did with my 2005 SCIC. My engine blew last summer 4 July 2006. A wrist pin on the crank broke and a piston rod went right out the side of the engine. No indications, no lights or alarms, just KABOOM! After 7 months, I got a new engine. When I put in the water Memorial Day, the check engine light stayed on. After three more trips to the dealer it got fixed.
Since I bought this boat in 2005, I noticed I was getting water in the bilge occasionally and the bilge pump would come on. I complained about it and the Techs could never duplicate the problem. Three trips to the dealer on this at $150 a pop. They finally found a void in the seam where the upper shell is bonded to the hull back by the swim ladder underneath the rub rail. The dealer said it is clearly a factory flaw. After a lot of arguing with BRP, Seadoo said they would pay the $1600 to have it fixed.
NOW as it turns out , Seadoo knew about this problem, since they have had several 2005 Sportsters with the very same issue. But they initially told me it was casued by abuse which was total BS. I'm 55 years old, have been a boater for 35 years and take miticlous care of all my boats. As soon as they get done fixing this leak, its up for sale. If any one wants a Sportster SCIC 215 with a brand new engine with two hours on it, $9500.
