Sounds like a very similar issue. Which small electrical box are you referring to? Are you referring to the multi-pin AMP connectors on the MPEM? A photo would be helpful.

Thanks for the advice....took all connectors apart and cleaned them. Figured I would change out fuel filters as well. Running great. No more surging or cut out. Filters flowed well, so I am suspecting it was the electrical connections as advised above. Thanks

I have a 98 1800,just last week I solve the same problem in my boat,after 5 minutes or less running fine the right engine started to surge like yours. the engine wont rev more than 4000 to 4500 rpms and if forced up it will shut off. it was driving me crazy as it only can be tested in the water. so I started changing parts like coils, then regulators from one engine to the other with no luck. finally we discovered that moving the plug on top of the small electrical box the engine started to work ok for a moment then fail again. so back home I took out the plug at the end of the cable side apart to discover a corroed terminal on the 12v cable(the red one)that was causing all the problem,this terminals are designed so it can be disassembled easely by removing the front and back covers so you can take the cables out if necesary. I also took the plug on top of the box out and cleaned it also,you just need to clean all the terminals with contac cleaner and a small wire brush and use dielectric grease on all the terminals to be sure it wont happen again.finally do the same on the other engine as a preventive maintenance. hope you can solve the problem!!

Update, thanks for the info...local locksmith was able to make the keys after bringing him in the latch sets.
