Hello All!
I have a 1995 Sportster and here is the story behind it.
The boat was owned since new and has been winterized and summerized every year since new. The last time it was winterized was 2002. I just got the boat out again last week. After getting a brand new battery it started up after a little convincing. The boat ran excellent and I had no issues with it. At this point the boat had 1/2 a tank in oil injection, and 1/3 a tank in gasoline (that was stabil-ized). Last weekend I ran the boat nearly dry in gas trying to get the old gas out of it, 1/2 hour on the water, full-throttle with NO problems (saturday). I got fresh 87 octane on Monday night (10% standard ethanol blend) and put 12 gallons into the gas tank. The oil resovoir looked fine so I didn't add any oil. About half way out into the lake (full throttle) the boat suddenly stopped dead in its tracks. I removed and replaced the lanyard and it restarted. I again hit the throttle (almost full) and it died within 10 seconds. Finally on the third try it would start and die right away. I let it sit for about 5 minutes, verified no obstructions in the impeller, and restarted it. I was able to limp it home at 10% throttle with no problems although it is probably running rough. Today I cleaned the battery cables and again went out to do more diagnosis. At first I went 55% throttle and after about 1 min it quit again. Again I got it restarted and went slow and was able to reach the dock. I cruised around my little bay at about 15% throttle with no problems, (or seemingly no problems) and I feel I could cruise that way for hours. I went out into the big lake again and hit the gas and it lasted about 40 seconds before quitting, much longer than before when I hadn't been going slow for a period of time. It seems, it is abverse to hitting top end. I feel it may be starving for air or fuel or maybe have some bad gas? Or maybe it's because the boat has sat so long, but it was fully winterized for that period of time sitting in a warm garage. (2002-2009). So please offer your advice. I was going to try and locate oil and fuel filters, also was going to replace the plugs.
Any thoughts or ideas that could help me would be amazing! Thanks
Andy
