and the answer is ....
the impeller intake got cloged which caused the exhaust port to over heat because the water wasn't there. Realized the problem after i pulled out two clumps of weeks stuck in each impeller intake port. The smoke that I saw was the 15" dia hose connected to the exhause port that was fring. Did't know this until I pushed the throttle down and head a loud noise like you would normally hear without an engine muffler. I opened the engine cover and noticed water spraying out into the engine where the exhaust hose is connected. I thought at first the clamp came disconnected until a realized that the exhause hose fried due to the hot temp. Part of the fried rubber is still around the circumference of the exhaust port. I will be ordering a new exhaust hose. Should be easy to fix.
