I have a 99 Speedster with dual engines.
Mine does not even beep at all sometimes, although it starts and runs normally, but you can use alcohol to clean the post and dess key. Surprisingly it fixed the problem and the beeps returned.
I think corrosion or suntan oil fouls the dess.
I also have a problem with one of the engine start push buttons as I have to wiggle it a bit when pushed down to get the engine to crank. Poor start button design I guess, or possible internal corrosion as well.
I also had a motor shutdown on me for no apparent reason.
When I got it back on the trailer I saw a rag wrapped up in the impeller. Apparently there are some sensors that shut the engine down if its fouled. Once I removed the rag it started and ran fine again.
They are great boats but as they age there will be some annoyances like this that need attention.
Its not likely to be the key and post itself, but rather some corrosion or grease causing problems.

Thanks Ray for the reply,
I too have had the boat shut down completely for no reason. (Both engines completely quit at full throttle) I took the shifter apparatus apart and cleaned the neutral switch and it hasn't done it since, but that may just be luck.
I did check the key against my 2002 RX and the key worked just fine, giving back the "Wrong Key" alert, so I'm pretty sure the key is OK. I bought another DESS just in case, but haven't installed it since cleaning the contacts, so if you need another DESS let me know...it's not doing me any good sitting in the spare parts box.
Thanks again,
John
