Hi, I recently purchased a 1997 sportster. I was driving it today at about 3/4 throttle when it started to lose power. I can start it but it runs horribly and sounds even worse. This is more than a skip. Any thoughts? A thrown rod?

take it to a dealer - just in case - unless of course you can take it apart and rebuild it yourself.
is it the engine thats noisey or the impeller area ?

When my impeller separated from the housing and shredded the wear ring I heard something rattling hard and it wasn't a repetitive knock. I opened up the engine bay and it sounded smooth as silk. Most spun rod bearings will have an audible knock and repeats with the same single tone. Check under the boat and inspect the pump assemby through the intake grate.
