My new toy

I got a wild hair driving home from work last Friday. I pulled into a boat shop and drove away with a new 2004, Utopia 205. I have maybe 8-10 hours on it. Never have been full throttle yet.
My question and scenario - With a 40 gallon tank, I was thinking I could go running around on a full tank for a good length of time. But again, yesterday, I went out on a glass top lake with a half tank @ 20 gallons, drove for 7 miles at @ 35mph and am now empty.
Is this a "break in" period? Am I to expect this kind of consumption all the time?
Less than 15 hours and 80 gallons seems a tad bit excessive for me. Am I being a tightwad?
I sure would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks ya'll

and as gas in the us is so cheap compared with here in the uk $9 a gallon - yes you are being a tightwad

but if you will dp these things on impulse

enjoy it - you will have hours of fun - just dont look at the gas guage

20 gallons should be good for about 25-30 miles. See the following links for tests results under normal conditions:Good Morning SeaDooians!

Did you put the 20 gallons yourself, or the the gauge mark half a tank? These gauges are known to drop suddenly from full to half and half to 1 quarter. So It may be you really had less that half!Good Morning SeaDooians!

The factory setting is all the way up. This is good for flat waters. By trimming it down, you get the bow of the boat down. This way, the bow breaks the waves. If you really need to get the bow down, I reccomend substituing the trim plate with a Place Diverter Trim Plate, or installing the Bennet trim tabs. But yes, you will notice a diference in handling (for the good) with the plate down. Thanks for the input......

The 240 EFI uses more gas then the Optimax engines and you may notice that it will smoke a little at start up also - based on other 240 EFI engine owners.Good Morning SeaDooians!

We took ours out last weekend and was running it at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle for a few hours (may be 3 hrs) and the gas gauge needle didn't even budge from the full mark. Did not tow anything at all, just a boat load of people cruising the water. Supposedly the Optimax is more fuel efficient then the EFI engines for some reason. Some people said the Optimax engine is up to 40% more efficient than the EFI.

No smoke of any kind when starting or idling. I put it in the shop to have them look at it. I did notice two things when giving it a good scrub down. 1) An enormous Wasp nest inside one of the vents in the rear. Don't know if that makes a difference. 2) While I was putting it on the trailer, I was next to a brick wall.....rather than smelling exhaust as I would expect, I got a big whiff of Gas...almost like breathing straight out of a gas can.Is the optimax engine smoke when you start it or at idle for a long time??
thx
I'm hoping its something simple....but right now the average mileage is .5 miles per gallon.
I did do something this weekend that was a first. I was skiing, she was driving...and low and behold.......THWUMP!! that boat sucked that rope right up inside. I started writing Readers Digest, Drama in Real Life, we were in the middle of the lake, two kids with us...both think that there are sharks in lakes. Got towed by one fellow, he broke down. Got another tow....I'll be danged...two Sea Doo Mechanics. Those two took turns diving under the boat to cut the rope out....a thanks and a case of beer is all it took. If the folks in boating are all like that.....I'll live on the lake

Are you talking about your 240 EFI engine? My question was about the optimax...No smoke of any kind when starting or idling. I put it in the shop to have them look at it.
