Hello all,
I just purchased this 98 Sportster and it ran excellent on test run and ran great for about 5 minutes when we dropped it in the river. Seamed to have great pick up and turned great. I was making a left turn and during the turn it sounded like the motors started over reving without any movement.
I know the boat does not have a transmission but the best way to describe the feeling is what a motor sounds like when it starts to slip the gear. It goes smoothly at an idle and then as you give it gas it starts to accelerate but only to a point and then it just goes into a high RPM and the boat starts vibrating without any movement.
Here is a link to a short You-Tube video of the issue. Can anyone please point me in the right direction. Really hoping I didnt purchase a $4,000 paperweight!
Thanks in advance.
Michael

99% sure you have cavitation going on caused by a number of things. Usually it's a plugged pump. If you have it on the trailer, inspect the pump inlet and look for weeds, rocks or any other debri that could have plugged the grate, or gone into the pump.
Since the engine runs smoothly and revs quickly, you can pretty much eliminate the engine.
The pump may have other issues like the impreller stripping splines and slipping, but that would be my very last guess. Anyone that has driven a SeaDoo around weeds knows this sound and has already killed the engines and jumped overboard to pull the blockage out of the intake.
Again, if on the trailer, you can shine a light in either end of the pump and view for blockage.
Good luck.
