Rebuild at 100 hours

I use the boat on Lake Keowee, SC., but the boat originally came from somewhere in Texas.
The boat itself and trailer is in A-1 condition. I paid $9K
He also gave me 4 jugs of Bombardier oil.
The guy I bought it from said that he had it serviced in the fall and had receipts for it. Winterized and jet drained, checked and refilled. He said he used it for fishing because of the shallow water it could float in.
Keep in mind I bought the boat because it is a twin, does not have props, and is safer for my 10, 14, and 16 year old kids. We pulled tubes and kneeboarders, and DID NOT doe the high speed spin stuff. Although the first owner may have, I don't know.
The first thing that happened was on around 90 hours the port jet locked up.
I took it in and they said 4 weeks till they could look at it! Thankfully a mechanic from another shop that was a Bombardier mechanic was there picking up parts and said he would look at it that day. Bottom line the folks that serviced it put the filler screw in crooked and all the oil drained out on the port pump and the pump came apart. School of hard knocks. No big deal.
Next thing. At 110 hours the starboard engine started acting up, so I shut it down and idled home on the port engine. Thank God for two engines.
Thought it may be a fouled plug so I went to change them and the back plug was pushed up against the electrode. Not good.
Took it in. Bottom line, engine is blown.
So two things:
1. Blown engine at 110 hours? What gives? Could the guy that bought it originally abused it so much that a stock 787 would only last 110 hours? Could it be a lemon engine? Seems like this engine is the better of the 2-stroke Rotax engines.
The port engine starts and runs great.
Starboard engine has always given us some trouble. Hard to start warm, 3/4 throttle or choke needed. Fouled plugs on a normal basis(previous owner backed this up as well).
2. Cost to repair:
Rebuilt engine - $1,500 - one year warranty
Carb rebuild kit - $70.00
Gasket set - $70.00
Labor - $2,000.00
Is this reasonable? I only paid $9K for the boat, motors and trailer!
Carbs rebuilt at 110 hours?
I did see that I can get a rebuilt engine from a few folks in Florida for $800-$1,100, and having worked on cars/boats/motorcycles, have the tools and knowledge to pull and replace the blown engine.
I REALLY REALLY like this boat. It fits us perfectly. And my hat is off to Bombardier.
If anyone can give me things to look for if I DIY?
I think the two companies in FLA I talked to were SBT and PPG. Any reason I should go with one over the other?
Thanks in advance for any tips and such. It is a really cool boat and I would like to not have to do this every summer!

First off, congrats on your new Doo (I think). It is not likely you just got a lemon engine in there, the 787 is a good engine. Lots of things could have caused the engine failure. A no oil situation, a too lean mixture on the carbs, an air leak, water ingestion at some point, etc.... The pump failure is just one of the things that happen when someone doesn't pay attention.
The prices you quote seem really high to me. And $2000 for labor? Gimme a break. You are right about SBT and/or PPG. Either one will have a reliable engine to replace your toasted one. And either one will provide support to make sure you DOO it right. I know of no reason to go with one over the other..... If you doo it yourself, you absolutely need to go thru the carbs, since the carbs could have caused a lean condition.
You need to get a service manual for your engines as well, it will help you out tremendously with the job ahead. Be sure to get a new oil pump (or both), to rule out a no oil situation. Replace the in line oil filters too. You are going to premix for a while to break in your new rebuild. Good luck with it!

I am happy I bought it. We have a lot of fun with it.
I may fix it and sell it so I can by a 1800 with the 4-tec engines in it.
I am not sure about a Mercury V-6 powerhead converted to be a jet boat engine. . . . Doesn't Bombardier own Johnson/Evinrude now? ;-)
So where can I get a service manual?

Bombardier does own Johnson/Evinrude now, but as for when we can see a Bombardier craft powered with a Bombardier powerplant other than Rotax, who knows. There are Johnson/OMC jetdrive outboards, so the jetdrive is not new to that particular engine lineup.
Service manuals can be found on eBay here:

I endorse this guy, I got mine from him and I think Kevin got his there too.
If you decide to sell- lemme know how much AS-IS, as it sits right now.....
