Kevin,
I am looking for a used 96-2000 speedster. My wife and I think we would like that much better then a PWC. I have given thought to purchasing a Windjet that is powered by two Sea Doo PWC or just to keep it simple a 14' Speedster.
What are the problems with the older Speedsters. I have 25 years of two stroke racing experience and feel I can do much or any needed work. Rotax part price and availability worries me.
I want to do my home work first so I don't get in CHEAP and have a maintainence nightmare.
Any advise you can give on 2 stroke twin vs 2 stroke single or 4 stroke would be appreciated.
Garry

Here is a search that I ran for ya for 1996-2002 Speedsters:

tiggerman is your guy for the rotax engines, I haven't had any experience with these models. The reason I went with the 2000 in my Speedster is because it was the first year they put the 240 EFI in them.
That is smart, I know I did a lot of homework before I bought my DOO. You should be able to get all the help you need here, we have a lot of knowledgable members on the site here.
Maybe someone else can elaborate more on this because as now I have only had experience with one type of engine.

The biggest problems with the older Doo's is going to be that they most likely were just "run the piss out of" to be blunt. They are performance craft, and were most likely run as such. You have to be careful that the previous owner actually took the time to doo things right. My Speedster was used, but taken care of somewhat. The PO used the wrong injection oil, but I haven't seen any problems yet. AND, I run the p$%^ out of it every chance I get.
Parts are plentiful if you know where to get them, and compared to Mercury, I believe the Rotax has the $$ advantage. The Rotax is not bulletproof, nor is the Merc,Yamaha, Polaris,Honda, or any other 2 stroke you can find. If you do blow an engine, a short block from SBT for a 717 Rotax is around $700 bucks. Price out a Merc powerhead.......
Compare costs between the Merc and the Rotax boats when it comes to maintaining the jetpumps. Let us know the results....
