The Utopia 185 is a sportboat that looks like a bowrider. She’s a family-friendly boat that delivers good performance and maneuverability with the safety of jet power.
The Utopia 185 has many features for an 18-footer. Starting aft there's good ski storage under the aft bench, and under the trunk there’s a built-in cooler to store all your beverages and food for the day, as well as any gear you’ve brought aboard. There’s also a kid-friendly sun deck that’s ideal for lounging.
Swivel bucket seats on the 185 open up the layout when it’s time for socializing. These padded bolster seats are great for keeping the driver and passengers snug in tight turns. The bowrider seats up front combined with seating in the cockpit enables a total of 8 passengers to come along for the ride. Non-slip grab handles on either side of the boat give your passengers a bit more comfort when running at high speeds. The full-size windshield is also a nice feature that protects the crew aboard from wind and spray.
At the helm the full instrumentation is within easy sight and reach. To ensure safety and security Sea-Doo’s unique control system maintains the right amount of thrust to provide steering at all times. It also helps assist the boater around the docks and launch ramp. This is another family-friendly feature that emphases safety and security. Another added safety feature is the Hydro-Surge intake grate on the bottom of the hull, which automatically clears debris from clogging the jet drive.
The great thing about jet power is that it’s safe. You won’t have to worry about props when swimmers or skiers are in the water. Best of all, you’ll feel at ease when the kids want to take the 185 for a spin on their own. With a jet drive there’s also less bow rise, which mean the driver will have a better view while the boat gets on plane. Most conventional boats have a high bow rise as their getting out of the water which is due to conventional props.
Jet drives also improve handling and acceleration. The jet drive directs water straight out instead of displacing it, the way a conventional propeller does. With better handling and acceleration you’re guaranteed to have a performer you can count on.
Jet drives also allow you to venture into shallow-water areas which makes adventuring closer to land a lot more fun knowing that you’re not going to run aground. Plus, if you do want to venture to land you can easily bring the Utopia 185 right up to the beach.
Measuring at 18’ 3” overall and 8 feet in beam, the Utopia is one of the widest boats in the sportboat class. The 2,050-pound hull has a deadrise of 20-degrees, a component that also adds to passenger comfort. With a sharp V on the bottom the Utopia can slice through the chop more easily than boats with flatter hulls.
Out on our test run the Utopia 185 ran at 45 mph at wide-open throttle, and her best cruise was 24.6 mph at 4000 rpm. At this speed the Utopia has a cruising range of 164 miles with a single fill of the 40-gallon fuel tank.
Besides being a good performer and a versatile sportboat, the Utopia is a blast to drive. We found the ride to be exhilarating and lots of fun. Sea-Doo knows how to amp up the excitement with family-friendly designs, distinctive styling, and features that make the Utopia 185 an all around sportboat.
