I am considering buying my first Seadoo sportboat - a 2000 Sportster 5673. I have the serial number and wonder if I can parse it to find out how the boat is configured. My knowledge about this style of boat is zero so any information I can find out would be useful. I couldn't find any information on interpreting serial numbers on this site.

Please feel free to provide me with any feedback you may have on similar 2000 Sportsters.

These boats are pretty standard so I don't believe the serial number is going to provide you much more information. SeaDoo is not one to offer "al la carte" features (yet....), they offer a model and that is what you get. If you look up a 2000 Sportster you should be able to find all the features that were offered on that boat.

I'm not sure if it is appropriate to add a supplemental question here or not but here goes.....

I have heard that weeds can be a problem for these boats. My cottage is in a somewhat weedy bay especially later in the summer. Will it be a problem getting a Sportster through a weedy area about 30 feet across near the dock?

These boats do sometimes have issues with weeds, really it just depends on the type of weeds. I would say just take it slow through these areas, use some trial and error to see how things go. If you find that you are getting a lot of weed intake you might have to buy some goggles to get under the boat (obviously when the engine is off) to clear them out once you get past this point.
