I had to 'upgrade' mine last year because water got in from behind. Sea-Doo and the dealer would not cover it because of 'water' damage, Neither would Clarion. Water on a boat, don't figure, right? Anyway, I replaced mine with a Pioneer from Best Buy and got the extended warranty. I told the salesman it was going in a boat and he said if it broke to bring it back and it would be covered. There is a slight difference, usually the marine units have an extra coating of epoxy on the circuit board if they get wet. Back on my boat, I sealed the area around the helm with calk on all cracks so water couldn't find its way in.I'd like to upgrade my stock sound system. Will a regular pioneer or jvc head unit work or does it has to be a "marine" stereo unit? I'd like to hook up an amp to boost the sound! Also, do I need to install a separate battery for the new sysytem? Again, thanks for any input.

I'm glad I could just buy a head unit from Best Buy. I'd probably buy one with extended warranty this weekend! Sealing it is a brilliant idea!
By the way, did you need a separate battery to enjoy your new sounds?
Thanks!

I had a car stereo in my speedster for a few years and it worked fine. No, I haven't installed a second battery yet. I usually try to keep ine trickle charged and I carry a 'jump' start battery with me on the boat at all times. I usually only listen to the radio while I'm crusing so it's not a problem. There is no wiring harness for the stock system that I found so I just cut the wires off the stock head unit since it was bad and reused that harness.
I just upgraded it to a marine JBL with a much needed remote
Also I'm running off the main battery, if I install an amp & seperate Sub I'll most likely add another battery. But for now I'm happy.
