I took my speedster Merc 240 out last night which was a beautiful summers evening in Dublin Bay. It all turned bad though. Passing Dun Laoghaire Pier the boat suddenly lost power and would only go backwards whether I was in forward or reverse. We go towed into Dun Laoghaire and a taxi journey and a couple of hours later I was back with the trailer to pull her out. It looks like the reverse bucket keeps falling down. When in forward it falls into the reverse position yet in reverse it is there too but with resistance.
Has anybody had the same problem? Does anyone know what is causing this? Is there a link broken, is the bucket normally on a spring? Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

I haven't run into this problem on my boat, but maybe someone else has experienced this?

I spent a couple of hours with her yesterday and we cried each other to sleep. With a very limited tool box I looked alot, scratched my head and put my hands on my hips. After all this I guessed it was a broken cable but must operate more before I can fully confirm. I have tried to get the shifter off but cannot get the right screwhead to get the bolts out on the second panel down. I shall keep you posted and if anybody can help with advice I would be very much obliged.

Dooin a sub move I broke some of my connections which netted me a similar result...I tied my buckets in the up positions and limped back to the dock.
I have dual 4 techs so my parts broken are gonna be different.

Enen though I figured it was the buckets fairly early on I had no time to tie anything up because we were about to be washed up on the rocks!
It's going off to hospital at the weekend hopefully so should be back on the water before the summer is out!!!

Problem solved. It was actually something quite simple. For some reason the cable came off its houseing which gave it slack and the bucket dropped. A few days away with a magical mechanic and all was fixed along with a full service and I am told she is putting out everything she has got!
