I am a new owner of a 2004 Sportster 4Tech, it has worked great but tonight the RPM's maxed out at about half throttle, didn't want to push it. What might cause this to happen?

RPM higher than usual

I would check and verify throttle cable and throttle lever operation while the boat is on the trailer.Check for binding of the throttle cable and that the cable adjustment locknuts are still tight.Sometimes the cable can pop out of the slot of the drum at the throttle valve at the engine. This would be a good time to lube the throttle cable and the drum with Bombardier spay lube or CRC Marine formula spray lube.I think this would be a good place to start and hope this helps you.Gary.I am a new owner of a 2004 Sportster 4Tech, it has worked great but tonight the RPM's maxed out at about half throttle, didn't want to push it. Also another thought, sometimes the water inlet at the grate can become blocked for a split second or a few seconds causing the engine to cavitate causing the engine to over rev for a brief instant.I hope this helps.Gary.I would check and verify throttle cable and throttle lever operation while the boat is on the trailer.Check for binding of the throttle cable and that the cable adjustment locknuts are still tight.Sometimes the cable can pop out of the slot of the drum at the throttle valve at the engine.
