Is the water coming from the tuned pipe or the waterbox (muffler)? The waterbox is more toward the stern(rear). It doesn't sound possible that the water is coming from there. The tuned pipe, yes- it is possible. There should be no water leaving the pipe until it is expelled from the exhaust. Check all the water hoses entering and leaving the head on the engine, and check the exhaust manifold bolts for tightness. Also check the small hoses on the tuned pipe for holes.

Do you think water was allowed to stay in the tuned pipe over the winter? You describe a "slit". The pipe could be cracked- by either vibration or freezing. There are a total of 4 water fittings on each tuned pipe. Is the slit on the pipe in the curve coming up toward the engine (Where the 2 large hoses are)? It's possible the exhaust system was allowed to sit full of water over the winter, froze, and cracked the pipe. If this is the case, find a tuned pipe on eBay for your particular engine. The tuned pipe for my 97 Speedster which has twin 720's costs $388 from www.worldofpowersports.com
