Valcourt, Québec, March 19, 2013 – BRP expands its marine engines portfolio by offering an in-board jet propulsion system, using its proven Rotax 4-TEC 1503 engine. BRP's Marine Propulsion Systems division in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, formerly the Outboard Engine division, will now assemble Rotax inboard propulsion systems in addition to Evinrude outboard engines.
The heart of the jet propulsion system is the proven Rotax 4-TEC 1503 engine that is currently used in Sea-Doo watercraft. This jet system provides an energetic, thrill-seeking driving experience not available with other propulsion systems, and is a viable alternative to stern drive. The Rotax 1503 power pack is available exclusively to boat builders and includes the 4-TEC 1503 engine, controls, fuel and jet pumps, along with the exhaust, electrical, propulsion and cooling systems.
"The Rotax power pack is a quality jet system superior to competitive engines, with more than 450,000 engines in the market," said José Boisjoli, president and CEO. "Though we've exited the sport boat business, there is demand from boat manufacturers seeking an alternative to stern drive."
In 2012, BRP completed a $15 million renovation to its Evinrude facility. The addition of the Rotax 1503 power pack assembly underscores BRP’s commitment to product development and assembly of propulsions systems.
Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP), a privately held company, is a world leader in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and marketing of motorised recreational vehicles. Distributed in more than 100 countries, its portfolio of brands and products includes: Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea Doo watercraft, Evinrude outboard engines, Can-Am all terrain and side-by-side vehicles and roadsters, as well as Rotax engines. BRP also provides parts and service to Sea-Doo boats and Johnson outboard engine owners. BRP employs approximately 6,800 people worldwide.

Scarab, one of the most venerable names in the history of performance boats, is making a comeback as a line of jet boats. Rec Boat Holdings announced today the introduction of a new line of boats from 16-24 feet that will be powered by BRP Rotax 4-TEC 1503 jet propulsion systems ranging from 140-240 horsepower.
Expect the lineup to live up to the Scarab name. "The boats will look more aggressive but will be very well laid out for family purposes," said Roch Lambert, the Group President of Rec Holdings. "They will definitely have a sportier look with more horsepower available [than other jet boats on the market]."
The smaller boats will have single-engine configurations, while the 21-footer will offer the choice of single or twin engines. The 24-footer will come with standard with twin engines.
Rec holdings has been testing prototypes of the boats since January and plans to have the first editions available to the public by late summer or early fall. Pricing has not been determined yet but will be competitive with other jet boats on the market.
Rec Holdings also plans to introduce two jet versions of the popular Glastron GT models. The Scarab jet line of boats will be a standalone brand. The Wellcraft Scarab line of performance center consoles will be renamed "Scarab Offshore," and remain separate.

Chaparral Boats Inc.
April 29, 2013

Nashville, GA - Chaparral Boats, Inc. announced a supply agreement today with Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) to power a planned new line of jet boats, slated for introduction later this year.
“BRP is excited to begin this relationship with Chaparral Boats, a company with a proud heritage, excellent reputation and one that shares our commitment to the marine industry,” said Alain Villemure, Vice President and General Manager of BRP’s Marine Propulsion System division.
“BRP’s Rotax 4-TEC in-board jet propulsion system is a proven power source and the perfect complement to Chaparral’s award-winning line-up of boats. We believe that this strategic relationship promises to deliver consumers a best-in-class boating experience that’s supported by an outstanding dealer network.”
Chaparral, a company noted for its design innovation, plans to enter the jet market with the same enthusiasm. “We’ve got exciting styling, performance and quality innovations on the way,” said Chaparral Founder, Buck Pegg “We are excited about the developments we have planned.”
“Our decision to move into jet propulsion expands our fleet and is in keeping with our strategy to bring new people into boating by offering Chaparral quality and style at value-minded prices,” said Jim Lane, Chaparral President. “Our brand is already associated with luxury family sport boats, sport yachts, cruisers, and through our Robalo line, sport fishing boats. The move into jet power is a perfect fit.”
Lane sees Chaparral’s new jet boats as an added profit center for its dealer network while also offering the company a chance to expand its reach into new markets.

BRP’s jet propulsion technology, recently made available to Rec Boat Holdings and Chaparral, might be made available to other companies.
Jason Eckman, product manager for Evinrude and former project manager in the engineering and development of Sea-Doo models, stopped short of saying the company is going to offer the systems to other boatbuilders.
“I would say we have our Phase One partners established. Those are the partners that have already been announced and we’re in discussion with second-phase partners to see who we will expand the business with,” Eckman told Trade Only Today. “I would say we’re in the process of deciding what the second phase is, so that implies that there will be more.”
“One of the things I would add is that since BRP exited this business [as a builder], it seems strange that we’re getting back into this,” Eckman said. “We didn’t have the network to support a large boat business. BRP’s network, with exceptions, mostly was a powersports network. At the same time, Sea-Doo as a boat brand did not have the recognition that it did as a PWC brand. So we had two challenges — network and brand. So it’s really exciting to see the propulsion system, which we know to be the best in the world, paired with strong boat brands and networks.”
Eckman also spoke about the new engine line geared specifically to the pontoon segment. See Trade Only Today on Tuesday for that interview.
