I have a 1998 Sea Doo Challenger 1800 with dual 787 motors. Both are having the same idle issue….I have a high idle speed of 2800 PRM and cannot get it lower. The throttle linkage is set according to the manual. It is resting on the idle speed set screw. If I back off the idle screw, the linkage will only go so far and not touch the screw. I have slackened the throttle cable and that doesn’t seem to matter….. It is going to, I presume, it’s fully retracted position. How do I get the idle speed down?

An idle speed around 3K out of water is normal. If this is your idle speed in the water, the there are a few additinal things you can look at.
First, as you have done, check your throttle cable slack. It may appear that you have provided the maximum slack available at the carb, but additional adjustments can be made at the throttle shifters.
Second, you can look at your low speed adjusters. A high idle may be an indication of a lean condition. In order to make an adjustment, you have to first remove the airbox and flame arrestor. The nominal adjustment is 1.5 to 2 turns out. Any less may cause the carbs to run lean, resulting in a higher idle.
Last, check the carb linkage to ensure both are in sync. An out of sync carb can cause the engine to run erratic with a high idle.
