Yesterday was the first time I used my "Brand New" Seadoo Sportster 4 Tec and I noticed that it was idling at 2,000 RPM's, as this was the first time I used the boat I am not sure what the normal idle RPM should be. I do know that at 2,000 RPM's the boat wants to take off in neutral. Help!!

probably normal, cause i know that the Seadoo 4-tec watercraft idle at 1800 rpm's

Super Charged is correct, the idle speed on the 4-TEC series of engines idles at 1800 RPM. It is non adjustable and controlled by the throttle position sensor through the MPEM. At that speed we set our 4-TECs to do about 1 MPH in neutral. That way you don't have to hold the shifter in a difficult position as you bring the boat into the dock. If it has substantial forward speed in neutral I recommend taking the boat back to your dealer and adjust it correctly. This very circumstance is why we advocate a water test before the sale and a demonstration run with the customer upon pick up.

After a visit with the service department and the mechanic adjusting the reverse gate to the correct position to obtain neutral, the boat is now manageable. I have been told that the engine idle can not be adjusted so 2,000 RPM's are what I'll have to live with.

kazie, I disagree that you should have to live with it. Thats almost a 10% error in idle speed. The service manual calls for 1,800 plus or minus 50 RPM. The TPS, throttle body, or whatever else needs to be replaced should be to get you to the disign idle RPM. At 1,800 the boat is noticeably less twitchy, I would insist on getting the correct RPM at idle.

could somone explain the MPEM to me in relation to what the driver feels in response.

I am a certified master "auto" mechanic. And the owner of a sportster scic. the computer sensors and systems are the similar to a new car. Just some of the terminolgy is different. Eng has a base idle speed which is set with a set screw and computer control disabled.The computer then can controll idle by controlling the airflow bypassing the throttle plate. The idle will not go below the base setting but can be higher according to eng load. Hope everything is clear as mud now
