Drive Shaft Protector Tubes

I'm trying to make sense of the directions, which seem to call for the tubes to be installed with the long oval hole and stop tab positioned on top. It fits nicely into place through the hull with the stop tab on the bottom... kinda seems like it was made to fit that way, but the directions and the World of Power Sports online diagram seem to show it on top.
I can only guess that the hole must be on top so that it draws water out of the protector tube instead of forcing it in. Also, looking at the diagram from World of Power Sports, it looks as though there is no longer a retaining ring for the protector tube. I wouldn't think they're needed, but my old ones had them... and I broke one.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

If the tubes are installed correctly, the " fingers" will snap into place when you push the tube through the thru-hull fitting. Use plenty of black silicone, as shown in the parts diagram on WOPS. The lock rings are available from them at around 3 bucks each- are they needed? Nah... Are the protectors needed? That is questionable. I run without them, although I have gone from the stock drive shaft seal to something else. I can't tell the difference. I actually had to trim the aft section of protector to be short enough to clear my Skat Traks, and eventually took them off. If you want to return the boat to the way it came, buy 'em.Last year, I lost both drive shaft protector tubes to a tube tow rope... sucked it up both inlets and wound around the drive shafts until the line went tight between them and the engines quit.
