Just got an 1997 xp as part of a trade. It cranks only when you touch a wire on both probes of the solenoid itself. When I press the start/stop button nothing happens... Can someone please help??

If it does not crank when pushing the button but does crank when you 'short' the solenoid, then most likely you need to replace the solenoid. I know when mine failed I would also hear a click when I pushed the Start button but nothing else until I replace the solenoid. They are not that much to purchase, so it would probably be the cheapest place to start.
Good luck.

I think the solenoid problem makes sense. But I'm not getting any clicking when I press the start button. Could it be that I need a new start/stop switch?

You possibly could need a new start swtich, but I would still try the solenoid first, probably a lot cheaper than a new start/stop switch.
