I have to choke a little more than usual to get my challenger 1800 (1999) going sometimes, but it seems from the amount of smoke coming out of the back there's something else going on. I checked the rave valve, and actually pinch the two lines off from oil reservoir each time so it's not oil leaking in. I'm about to try and clean carbs but have no idea what I'm going to find when I open them up. Any ideas? The engines smoke for about 10 minutes after first starting them. I'm using the sythentic mototr oil too so it's not cheap oil or anything. Thanks for the help. Tom

Sounds like oil in the crank being burned off. Even though u have pinched the lines there is still a lot of oil in the center of the crank that those seals are suppose to keep in there and when they go bad they let the oil leak into piston side of the cranks. It doesn't take much oil To get a lot of smoke. I'm not a fan of pinching since oil will still get past there but your problem is in the crank seals. Since it burns off you have a slow seal leak that will get worst My 2 cents Jeff

Hi Tom, I had a similar problem in one of my engines, in my case it was the rotary valve seal that was defective. the oil was passing from the valve shaft area into the intake valve area. so when you started it cold the accumulated oil in the intake manifold will cause the engine to smoke more than normal. also check as Jeff said the crankshaft seals as it will cause the same condition of excessive smoke

Check the oil injector cable coming off the PTO (aft) carb and make sure it has not come loose/broken. If it has,this will make your oil pump run wide open causing you engine to smoke. (Sea Doo failsafe.)

If the cable is still connected, get a mirror and look at the oil inlection pump on the front of the engine. You should see two lines. One on the pump body and one on the linkage. Those lines should be aligned together while the throttle is at idle. If not then adjust the linkage until they are aligned.

If all of the above is correct and your engine still smokes, Get a pop off pressure gauge and pressure check the crankcase to see if it bleeds down.

A crankcase not holding pressure is usually one of two things:

1. RV seal leaking. Can be replaced without removing the crankshaft or splitting the case.

2. Center crank seals. - Full teardown and rebuild
