Thanks Kevin. I just purchased a new 180 Challenger this weekend, so I'm new to the site. I did see some of those posts however many are quite old by now. Is there a way to filter for newer posts? Apologies if this comes up a lot; I'm just beginning to navigate my way through the topics.

If you decide not to purchase a GPS, there are some great apps out for your smartphone. (if you have one of course)

I just downloaded Navionics Marine and Lakes for my iPhone. It is going to give me lake maps and contour maps for the lakes that I will be exploring. Check it out and the price is right too.

The old Lakemaster maps used to run $100 to add to any GPS. Now that Hummingbird bought them, they are no longer available for all GPS brands. So Navionics jumps in with their Marine and Lakes app for $10 for US and $15 for US/Canada. That's a steal if you don't need the greatest maps in the world, but these are more than adequate for pleasure boaters.

I just spent mother's day with my folks Walleye fishing and ran this Navionics app while in the bow. Of course my father runs all his electronics in the stern with him.

I tell you what, this app was very accurate and detailed. I was amazed at how the depth lines were following the sonar very closely. Instead of dropping waypoints when we caught fish, I actually hit the camera button and popped a photo of the fish we pulled in . After a few hours you could see the trends of where we were pulling in fish. I ended up with a nice tight group of 6 walleye photos on my GPS map! It was very cool.

Again, this is still a great recommendation for the pleasure boater or fisherman on a budget. I also use the Ultimate Addons waterproof case with my iPhone. It allows me to still use the touchscreen while protecting the phone on the boat and on the handlebars of my bike.
