Hello, I live in South Fl. and came across your site while researching jet boats. I was thinking about purchasing a 2005 Sportster 4-Tec. I came across that long post about problems with it and trouble the owner was having with the manufacturer, etc. Do think this was a mainly a dealer issue? The dealer I visited locally seemed very good. I know the owner personally.
So, what do you think about the sportser? I've never owned a boat. I've only done some jetski renting, etc. Is this a good beginner boat or is it too technical?

Personally I just think the boat he had was a bad apple and the consumer had a bad dealer that didn't want to help him get his issues resolved. I helped him resolve his issues and he is happily in a brand new Speedster 200 now.
I would say that most definitely it is a good beginner boat, just make sure you give yourself enough practice approaching objects....the jets make these boats a little tricky to get use to at first. Once you get it down though you won't every want to drive a prop boat again, these boats are unreal on how responsive they are!

can anyone direct me to the 'long post' which shows all the problems with a 2005 4-tec, or alleged problems anyway. sounds like whoever it was has them sorted but would be nice to know what to look out for- if you know what i mean.
The boat that just passed you was a seadoooooooooooo.

interesting post - what is more interesting is how dealer/manufacturers always win, for example -he had a problem with a sportster and to ultimately solve his problem he buys a speedster at another $10k - sounds to me like the dealer was rubbing his hands together.
last year I successfully sued my local dealer of a very well known us boat - in english law it is the dealers responsibility not the manufacturer - regardless of where the fault lay.
in pre litigation discussions with the dealer, their answer to my problems was to heavily discount a bigger boat - ie i give them more money - yeh right.
we sued - we won -
the moral of the story is -
generally speaking the law does favour the consumer - stick to you guns and give em hell - if all else fails use bloody great nails.
