I'm assuming I can buy the part from my local dealer but just need some advice on removing the broken one. Should I be removing the driveshaft first ? This doesn't seem to want to budge either, I seem to remember last time I had the pumps off one of the driveshafts came out with the pump, not this time though, they seem in there solid..
Hellp appreciated...... Adrian

The driveshaft protectors are more or less "glued" in place by heavy body silicone sealer, and should pull free with some effort. Some have locking rings that you can't see unless you remove the rubber "bellows" hose in the engine compartment.Pull harder on the protectors and they will come out (wiggle them around as much as you can).Have just replaced the wear rings on my boat, the pumps came off , no problem, but after removing them I noticed one of the drive shaft protectors is sort of broken. Can someone give me some advice on how to remove it ? I have tried pulling it (from the pump end) but no joy.

If the shafts didn't come out with the pumps, that's a good thing. It means they are being held in place by the stainless seal on the shaft.
You don't have to remove the shafts to replace the protectors. They are available from BRP or your dealer can get them. I paid $10 each from World of Powersports.
There has been discussion on whether or not they are even needed in some cases.

Bob, you are right. There is a thin plastic ring that is supposed to lock the protector in place. And the shaft is too big at the impeller end to slide the protector over it. My bad.... Glad you corrected me!!Tiggerman, are you sure the protectors slide right on over the drive shaft? I got a rope tangled around one of mine way back in '96 and it cracked it up. I took off the pump and got all the rope and broken pieces out. I bought a new protector and it wouldn't slide on over the shaft. The rear end of the shaft is larger in diameter than the rest of the length of the shaft. The guy at the store told me I have to take the shaft out and put the protector in place and then slide the shaft through it. If I remember right he said there is a locking ring or something holding the shaft in place near the front end of it. He also said it's debateable whether you even need the protectors. I couldn't figure out how to release my driveshaft so I put it back together without it and it's worked fine for years now. I still have the new protector in case I ever figure out how to get the drive shaft out. I wonder if the '96 has a different type of shaft than the '97?
