Hi all,
I am thinking about getting a boat and I am trying to do a little homework.
I would be a first time boat owner and would like to know your expericences with your jet boat and what kind of issues you have. How and why is a jet boat better than any other boat?
please feel free to be frank and ramble if necessary.
Thanks in advance,
Researching a new boat

Ok. First time owner myself, of a 2010 Challenger 180 SE. Boat will be 1yr old in 2 weeks.
First consideration was prop or jet. I went jet for the quickness and safety of not having a prop. Even though several people I know have props, and one had owned an old islander.
Next was size. The 180 with 8 passengers had enough room, unless ALL my relatives show up. And the trailer with swing away tongue would fit in the garage. Its also a light boat. Actually, light enough to get on and off the trailer without much help (or none as an 11 and 15 yrs old girls aren't much help).
Third decision was new or used. I went new since I have never owned a boat and wanted the security of a warranty.
All in all, I am very happy. A few small things I would like to see different now, but if this one sank tomorrow, I would buy another the minute the insurance check arrived.
PS: There are several other threads on this topic if you look.

Thanks kseroski70, This information is really helpfull. from what I have already researched I think jet is going to be the way to go. I have heard stories of the engiens requering a little more TLC than an Prop drive

The engine hasn't needed anything other than a little coolant after the first run, and the 10 hour maintenance for the new engine.

Where are you going to use the boat? (Ocean vs Lake)
What are you going to use the boat for? (Towing Kids vs Partying vs Serious Wake Boarding)
I decided to get the Sea Doo because of the engines, I had my previous Sea Doo engines for 6 years with very little maintenance and I absolutely trust their reliability. I have now ventured 40 miles off shore from the California coast in my new boat (my previous record on my PWC was 70 miles). I have taken the boat through 10' breaking swell and had waves crash over the top of the boat, no issues with the toughest ocean conditions.
I typically cruise at 30mph, and only use about 3.5 mpg. That is something to consider with other boats.
The boat is great and I really recommend it. I have the '11 210SP.
