I was given this 1998 sea doo challenger 1800, it has an electrical short, it always blows the fuse that is next to the battery, there is 3 fuses but only blows one. I poked around and could not find any exposed wires so I took it to a boat shop, they say they cant figure it out either and I need to take it to a sea doo dealer. The previous owner said the sea doo dealer quoted $1500 to fix it so the bought a new boat. is this a problem with the big black box where all the wire harneses plug in? I think its called the MPEM? if this is the problem can buy a new or used one and just swap them out or is there more to it than that?

If this is the problem, yes you can order one and swap it out. Give Perry Performance Group a try, http://perryperformancegroup.com/

could this short be because of the MPEM or the CDI?

It could be the MPEM but you need a dealer to confirm.

I will take it in and have them diagnose it for me.
1. if that is my problem would that a $1500 fix from the dealer?
2. is it worth it to rebuild one yourself or buy a used one?
3. where is this part located?

1. Get more than one opinion before paying that.
2. Buy used or new.
3. Give Perry Performance Group a call or pick up a shop manual here to determine where the part is located in your boat.
