Hello to all. Hope everyone's enjoying their summer. I have a quick question maybe someone else has had this noise. When I start up my engines in the driveway my port side engine sounds like a washer is spinning around on the driveshaft (thats the best way to desribe it). It is a really loud rattling sound. Nothing like it on my starboard side engine. However when it is in the water you do not hear the rattle.
Does anyone have an idea what this could be? I would like to fix it if I can before the end of the season.
Thanks
John

Long time no see John!
Could be that the driveshaft seal is just loud out of the water, or could be the jetpump bearings on that side. If you can remove that pump, check that there is no slop or side to movement of the impeller, and that it spins freely and quietly.

Thanks I will check it out. So far everything you have guided me on has been right and worked. Thanks.
I took a bunch of kids out tubing about 2 weeks ago, everything was going well until they weren't paying attention to the tow rope and yep sucked it right up to the tube. Had to deflate the tube and slowly hobble back to the ramp. I think it took about 45 min. to get back. What a job to unwrap the rope from the driveshaft, even with the pump removed. Live and learn.

Sorry to hear that, but you are a member of an elite club now, killing poor defenseless tow ropes..
Anyhow, also be sure you put the little rubber bumpers back in the end of the driveshaft when you took that pump off..... Good luck and if ya need us we are here!

Hey tiggerman, I had the boat out this weekend and when I came home and flushed out the engines I took special care in trying to track down that noise. You seem to be right again, the noise appears to be coming from outside the boat from the jet pump casing. That would make more sense being that it makes no noise when it's in the water. I will have to pull off the starboard pump and look further.
Thanks,
John

Glad you found it John, now it is all up to the repairing it. I wouldn't take it out again until it is fixed... but that's just me! You going to doo the work yourself or take it somewhere?

triggerman, I will pull the pump myself and see if it something I can fix myself. I hate to pay for someone else to fix something that I can do. I am wondering if when I took the boat out for it's maiden voyage and sucked the rocks up into the jet pumps, if that is when the noise started. I don't remember having the noise when I bought the boat. I guess a bearing could have gotten damaged when the rock jammed it.Glad you found it John, now it is all up to the repairing it. Possibly rocks, possibly rope, fishing line, or just plain time for it to go. Rebuilding the pump should be a piece of cake for you, provided you have all the stuff to doo it.
