Does anyone know if a shift lever from a '97 speedster will fit a '96 speedster? I broke my shift lever and you can buy just the lever for '97 and up but on '96 and below shows to have to order the whole assembly at $717. The shift lever on a '97 is only $110. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about the exchange of the shift levers. But, whatever you do you should convert it to the single shift cable. The '97's went to a single cable, or was it '98? Anyhow, I converted mine and it's a great thing to do. You need to buy the small pipe that fits between the two thrust diverters. It's easy to drill the holes and bolt it in. Then eliminate the shift cable from the left gate. You have to disable the locking clip on the gate that you've removed the cable from. When you remove the left cable you seal up that hole good with some marine silicone sealant. If the mounting of the '97 shifter fits the hull, sounds like that's the one you want when you do this conversion. I modified mine to the single cable before breaking the shifter so I've got the original '96 shifter in mine. I'd bet the '97 would work if you eliminate that left shift cable. I'm very non mechanical so if I could do it, you can do it. When I ordered that tube at the dealer both the parts guy and the service guy told me it couldn't be done. The service manager said he even asked SeaDoo about it and was told it can't be converted. Ha. The pipe and all the nuts/bolts/washers (you want to make sure to use stainless and nylock hardware here) cost me about $34. A new shift cable for the broken left one I had would have cost $85.
Here's a few pictures of how I did mine:

Thanks for the info and great pics, bob. I'll Look into that conversion. FYI, for anyone that has a '96 speedster, the shift lever for a '97 model WILL fit. Two different dealers said they didn't know. I called World of Power Sports and they didn't know either. They said I could order it and if it didn't fit I could send it back for a 20% restock fee so I took the gamble and ordered it. Fits perfect.
