I have purchased a 2008 Sea Doo Challenger 180 with low hours. I have been on the water several times and have run into an issue. It is throwing a P1656 code (check engine) and will not start. I have sat in the middle of the lake for an hour with the DESS "key" out and battery shut off. It does reset but the next time I took it out it did the same thing. What are the possible cause or fixes. Please help.

Unfortunately this would be a hard one to diagnose remotely. Not the best answer, but it would probably be best to take it the local SeaDoo dealer so they can hook it up to their B.U.D.S. system to determine what is really going on. Keep us posted.

Thank you for answering my question. By the time I would get to my "local" dealer, which is an hour away, it would reset itself. Is there anyway they could hook it up and tell if the code is not showing. Does it list prior error codes on the B.U.D.S system. Not the most cost effective way to do it but should I start replacing things, like reprogramming D.E.S.S. key first, then if it does it again, fix something else. I just dont want to be out in the Gulf of Mexico diving and surface to find that the boat wont start. Good security feature while diving but I would like to get back to shore at some point.

Personally if it were me it would make the hour drive, let the dealer determine the problem and fix it. Rather than replacing arbitrary things and potentially wasting the money, to me an hour drive sounds much more reasonable. Plus the piece of mind that once it is fixed you will not get stranded for this problem. Keep us posted on what you decide.
