This year the engine cover hatch on my boat is misbehaving. When I pull the hatch release it doesn't open up on it's own. I need to get some fingers under the edge and get it started, after which it opens right up. The problem is that it's hard to reach the hatch while simultaneously pulling the release handle.
I'm guessing the gas springs are getting worn out, but they work just fine once the hatch starts to open so I'm reluctant to replace them. I just need something to give the hatch an initial push.
Has anyone come up with a solution for this short of replacing the gas springs?

You are probably going to laugh at this answer but you could keep a paddle oar in the boat so that you can reach engine hatch while still pulling the release.
Keep us posted if you come up with a better solution.
