Thanks! I like it very much.Man that thing is awesome!
I lived in Atlanta about 10 years ago. Did all the lakes (fishing).
Which is you favorite. Lived in Dunwoody. Like Oconee, Jackson, Hartwell, etc.
Lanier was a little too crowded.
Live in Jacksonville now and do alot in the St. Johns River. Its much different than the lakes but enjoy it very much.

I remember so many people on Lanier it was dangerous. Every year several would be killed. It is just too close to Atlanta.I am currently living in Dunwoody too. Lake Oconee is by far my favorite lake to boat on, like you I think Lake Lanier is way over crowded and not properly regulated.
Ever get down my way in Jacksonville, I would love to show you some great places. We got springs where the water is so clear that you can see 50-60 down to the bottom.
The St. Johns is fresh water and nice when you go south or you can go north and be at the mouth of the River and the Atlantic ocean in about 40 minutes from my ramp.

That sounds awesome! Got any digital shots of this, I would love to see it?
That sounds really nice, I have never taken my DOO out on a river. How does it compare to boating on a lake? Do you notice significant drag when you are going back up against the current?

Check out my Pbase gallery where there are some river shots at http://www.pbase.com/greggebhardtYeah that is exactly what I was meaning by not being properly regulated, sometimes the swells get so big out there it is just ridiculous!

The St. Johns is tidal so your speedo can error depending on if you are going against the flow or with it. It does add a little into docking as you have to compensate for the current. No a big deal. If you are in a narrow spot when the tide/flow is really moving you maybe going no where and have to increase speed. BUT, if you happen to be going in that direction you can be doing 10-12 miles an hour at idle!
Biggest difference is the weather. Being close to the ocean the river can go from calm to 4-5' rollers until the event passes. The plus is there is so much to see and do on the river. Lots of place to discover.

Thanks for the heads up on river riding, sound like it might quite a challenge for a newbie going on a river.

Couple of questions....where did you mount your GPS and do you have any pics of it mounted?
BTW - I live up here in Savannah so I'm with you about the trickery of coastal boating. Wind, tides, currents all make for an interesting day sometimes.
I'm very interested in doing some boating on the St. John's river some time. Would you be up for for a chat about places to go (launch?), interesting places to explore, that sorta thing?

It is hard mounted without the articulating bracket to the dash where the cig. lighter outlet used to be. Works perfectly and is actually shadded and protected by the windscreen overhang.Hey Greg!

It is hardwaired into the power block and the nema out goes to the Horizon Matrix radio. This allows it to show your position when you key your mike. I also mounter the 48" Shakespere Galaxy antenna. This equipment may be overkill for lake Dooing but on the St. Johns River is comes in very handy.
Took my Doo 60 miles on the intercoastal to Amelia Island/Fernadina Beach for luch last week. Had a really good time.
Would be glad to meet up when ever you want. Was considering trailering the Doo to Savannah, it would be nice to have someone show me some of the good spots. I would be glad to do the same with the introduction to the St. Johns. Lots of nice place to doo. We can launch out my back yard inot the St. Johns. I am just at the mouth of Goodby's Creek on the St. Johns. You can be in the Atlantic at Mayport in about 35-40 minutes!
I will post images and a link to my pBase site this weekend to show the install details.

if this does not work go to http://www.pbase.com/greggebhardt and look under the D100 images
Nice thing about this unit is with a touch of a button the unit comes off the dash for locking up or using in the car.

Thanks for the photos and info. Your GPS mount looks very clean. Space is so limited on our boats and what area there is, the mounting surfaces aren't flat.

Speaking of mounting issues....I would really like to have a depth sounder/fish finder for my Doo, but trying to find a place to accomodate a 7"x7" screen is tough. And running a cable to the transponder looks to be a royal PITA. Are you using any kind of sounder? If so, I'll probably wanna pick your brain about that too!

Can you tell me which model number your VHF radio and antenna are? I too would like to have a fixed mount radio. Currently I use a handheld Apelco, but would like the talk power of a fixed mount. I agree that this stuff is probably not needed for most lake Doo'ers, but in our neck of the woods it's almost imperative.
Lastly, you coming here or us coming down there sounds like fun. I'd be glad to show you around our waters. Can't make any promises about when we'd be able to come your way, but we will definitely take you up on the offer. And if you wanna come up, just let me know and we'll try and work something out.
Again....thanks Greg.

I would too but am only going to install a digital depth meter for some type of safety. It will only require a standard gauge hole in the dash and will shoot thru hull just in front of the engine/pump. There is a nice flat spot that looks ideal and if installed correctly the thru hull should do good enough for telling me what depth I am in.
The radio is the Standard Horizon "Matrix". I mounted it with all the electrical behind the console and use the remote RAM+ mike which you can see hanging. It works quite well. The 48" antenna is made by Shakespere and is the only 48" VHF antenna in the "Galaxy" series. I picked this model due to it better than average RF performance for a 48" antenna and build quality.
I might take you up on the offer for your neck of the woods but it will be fall before I can get away from my company. We are in our busy season, I got 30 employees.

Yeah - I looked at the digital depth meters you're talking about, but the better ones can be pricey. In fact, the ones that were highly rated in the July 2003 issue of Powerboat (the Raymarine ST40) cost more than some fishfinders. Plus, some fishfinders have NEMA connections. From my past experience boating in coastal waters, I like knowing what the bottom looks like - not just what the depth is. For example, if my depth alarm goes off, I wanna know if the bottom is still "coming up" or is it "falling away". And when anchoring, I want to know if there's obstructions that might foul my anchor. This kind of info is just not possible with a depth sounder. However, IMHO, a depth sound is better than nothing at all.
I saw the spot you are referring to as a location for a shoot thru the hull install. And unless my memory is bad (which it is on many occasions), most of that location is occupied by the bilge pump on my boat. Yours???
Thanks for the info about the VHF radio and antenna. I'll check them out at my local Boater's World.

As for us meeting up.....hey, no problem. If it doesn't happen this year, there's always next year!
