I'm looking to purchase a VHF radio and since I know nothing about them, I'm looking for some suggestions.

We were on the water yesterday and had to get towed in due to some steering issues with the boat. We dont have a VHF, we used cell phones to contact TowBoat US. We were advised to get a VHF radio.

I could use some advice. thanks

Obviously a hand-held would be the easiest as there is no installation required. Otherwise you are into flush or gimbal mounting a radio plus installing an antennae and running the power wire and antennae coaxial cable. Generally a permanently-mounted VHF will give you more power for a lower price whereas you will pay a premium for a hand-held VHF. Like all electronic items from microwaves to flatscreen TV's, there is a vast range of price points and quality out there. You best bet would be to find a good boat chandlery with a knowledgeable electronics sales guy to help you out. FWIW, in the Toronto area Radio World is a good place to shop with very good sales staff.

I just purchased a cobra mr hh475. Its a floating, waterproof handheld. Nothing to mount, and decent range. It also has blue tooth, so my iphone stays in the glovebox. paid aroind 180 bucks.
