I know this subject has been talked about quite a bit but having a hard time distilling down to an answer so I will throw it out:

My boat has the stock Hydro Surge Grate (I think its part number 856627T3 but mine doesn't have the Spring Inlet Grate p/n 24-856628T). I've had trouble with debris getting sucked into the jet (plastic milk bottle and tree limbs - my home lake is not the most pristine lake out there).

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on whether I should switch to one of the other intake grates like the 852962T or 854810T1 (or if I added 24-856628T if that would help from sucking up the debris).

I just received my 854810T1 today. After doing much research on this topic, this one was the clear winner. Google the word Hydrosurge, click on images and you will see broken tines. If you read about their experiences, you will probably park your boat until it is replaced.....I know I did!

No problem. That's what we're here for....to help each other.
Here is my new intake grate beside the old one. You can see on the black tines where they were starting to wear, making them weaker and more likely to break off.

I feel very lucky that others took the time to post the information about the poorly designed HydroSurge, or I may have been just another victim.

Thanks. I ordered mine today and hope to get it in the next 2-3 days.

I definitely will not be taking the boat out until I get the new one installed.

The help on the forum has been 'grate' :-)

Got the new grate installed yesterday, took about 20 min, then spent all day on the lake w/o a single problem-everything from full throttle to slow, lazy creeping in a narrow cove. I am very hopeful that this is the fix I've been looking for. Thanks for all the advice.

Now if I could just find a solution for that sticking rear seat locking support..... :-)

hello, i'm not sure if this is the correct place to post/ask this, but i have a 2000 Speedster with the Mercury M2 engine and the hydro surge grate, and i'm looking to replace it. i wanted to make sure that this is the correct part number for my boat (before i drop the $$$) since most of the topics i've seen discussing this are related to other models of Sea Doos (Challenger and Islandia).

My upgraded intake grate saved me last weekend! I was riding a lake that is in a series of lakes and dams. There was not any water being let out of the lake above this one, so the water was not moving. At one bend there was a high bluff which blocked all wind and the water was stagnant with quite a bit of leaves, sticks, pine needles and some trash . We were 20 miles from the dock and I wanted to get to the dam which was only 2 more miles so we plowed on through the debris. I sucked up quite a bit of trash against the intake grate but nothing stopped me!

This lake is fed by water coming out of the bottom of the other lake so it is COLD!!! The lake temp was 53 degrees Fahrenheit / 12 degrees Celsius the day we were there, so I definitely didn't want to have to swim under the boat to clean it out. Here are the pictures I took when I got it back on the trailer:

Hi,

After seeing the other photos I have to show everybody what I got sucked to my Hydrosurge....

Does everybody think that the Stainless would still be better for weedy conditions????? I am looking for the best one for the weedy conditions!!! Any suggestion??????

It is a turtle. It was pretty scary to go swim and pull that thing on the leg and had no idea what kind of animal it was, I could just feel that something was stuck there.....

Yes I know the turtle did not even broke my original hydro grate with the easy weedless which was amazing so I guess my original might be good quality one. I still would like to get a comment from somebody what is their opinion for the best grate for very weedy conditions???

We still have our stock grate and our lake is not weedy so we haven't been faced with any issues here - I will have to let someone else who boats in a weedy lake chime in.

Do you know if anybody has a wiring schematics for the Chalenger 2000 ???? I have the shop manual but that does not include the Schematics!!!
