I have a 97 Challenger 1800. It starts, and idles fine. It will not rev over 3500 rpms. This makes for a slow ride. any help?

What condition are your impellers in? Have you had a look in the intake grate to ensure there is nothing in there blocking anything?

Yes it is both motors, Nothing cloging the intake grate.

Ever heard of a rave valve problem? I will pull the carbs though.

The Raves usually have an effect a little higher then 3500. Although its possible. Might want to clean connecter at MPEM. The twins operate off the same controller,I believe also find all grounds and clean them.The mpem might be running in like a safe mode,for instance a faulty ground could cause it to falsly sense an engine overheat{explaining why both engines are acting like that.} Keep us posted-the present might solve the future

Also the fuel selector might be plugged up,try moving it to Reserve,

Hi there!!

just to be sure you can try the neutral switch, disconnect it from the plug and try reving the engines, it could be stuck and making the comp to think
the selector is still in neutral.

Thats a good idea-Adventurer-I never thought of that, makes sense.Something is effecting both powerplants.

I have the same issue with a 2000 sportster. Occassionally it will rev slightly over 3500 rpms, but immediately drops right back down.

If your stuck at 3500 it's going to be the rev limiter. if your trying it out on shore make sure you have it in forwards. When it hits the rev limiter it kills the engine and let's it restart at 2800 rpm so it sounds like bad carbs but it will just be the limiter. If you have it in forwards and still sputtering at 3500 you will need to bypass the forward switch on the throttle
