I just purchased a new Riviera Blue Challenger 180 SE (215hp) last week and I asked the dealer about the washers as I was getting my orientation on the boat; the dealer said I did not need to worry about ceramic washer clutches in the boat because Sea Doo has change to Steel Washers on the 2008 and forward on the SCIC motors. I was also reading at another site that this was the case; I just want to confirm that this is the case.
I do plan to change the oil at 10 hrs with Seadoo syn blend that I purchased at the dealer as well as the 100 hr service on the washers. I have been kind of spoiled the the 4 tec because my 2002 GTX limited has been maintenance free except for oil changes and new plugs last year; it only has about 90 hrs on it.

I don't understand why SeaDoo would take such a chance on damaging there reputation over such a tiny issue? What do they hope to save per boat $10 bucks? This is the kind of stuff that got automakers in trouble. In any event I'll be sending a letter to the dealer asking them to confirm what was told to me and if it proves different I'll have it in writing. The boat does have a 1+1 warranty and I'll be considering what to do before that period ends.

I HAVE JUST CHANGED THE CERAMIC WASHERS TO RIVA SS WASHERS TO MY CHALLENGER 180 SE 2008 YEAR MODEL!
THE SUPERCHARGER HAD SAME INNER DIAMETER (NEW STYLE) SHAFT AND CERAMIC CLUTCH WASHERS! ALSO THE SUPERCHARGER HOUSING IT WAS WITHOUT OIL HOLE AND WITHOUT NEED FOR EXTERNAL BACK SIDE WASHERS BETWEEN ENGINE & SUPERCHARGER HOUSING!(NEW STYLE ALSO?)
AFTER ONE SUMMER AND 29 HOURS IT WERE(THE CERAMIC WASHERS) IN GOOD CONDITION WITHOUT CRACKS OR ANY VISIBLE DAMAGE!
TRUST ME I CAN SLEEP BETTER THIS SUMMER AFTER THIS CHANGE!

FWIW my brother has a pair of 03 GTX supercharged units that have about 90 hrs on them and he has not changed the washers yet, I know they get unhooked from the water a lot more than a boat does, he has run Amsoil 10w-40 made for super charger clutches since new in 03'. He is Planning to change them soon, I'll give an update when I see them.
