You never mentioned how your wear ring looks. It should be very very lightly worn. You can replace a wear ring without touching the impeller. I just changed mine after sucking in some shells from too much throttle in the shallows, the impeller looked fine.
Dont do more than idle speeds in anything less than 4 or 5 feet of water to decrease the chances.
It seems kinda crazy that some weeds caused damage.

I've owned a 180se for two years now, but it has turned out to be a pain in the rear. I replaced my impeller last week after having it at a dealer several times trying to figure out why I was burning fuel like a tank (8 gallons per hour) and couldn't have more than 3 adults in the boat and cruise at more than 15 knots. I had the old impeller out twice, but it looked fine, just a little damage to the leading edge and a slight angle change on the trailing edge from a pebble. Filed it clean, pounded it back into shape and put it back in ...still no luck. I put a new OEM impeller in and it fixed the problem for exactly 2hrs. I picked up some weeds and bang....back to traveling at 10 knots and burning fuel like crazy. When I hit the throttle it just hyper revs without any velocity change??????NO visible damage to the impeller, but I haven't pulled it out yet (just looked in the intake and jet)
