The opening is designed that way because it has to suck the water in to force it out via the jet nozzle in the back, this is not something that you would want to cover or block by any means. Best approach is have a spotter on the rope at all times, if the rope goes out of sight get ready to kill the engine(s).

Not good times when that happens! It is bound to happen though especially if you are new to jet boats, kind of a learning experience. I hope nothing was damaged to badly, keep us posted once you get the rope and are able to see how everything looks.

Went tubing today, sure it was fun til the rope was sucked up in the impeller. Good thing my buddy brought his boat to tow me. When I got home I went under the boat to take the rope out. Has anyone had this happen while tubing. Under the boat there is an opening for the water to go through. Is there like anything that is custom made to put in that opening of the boat so the rope wont get caught down there. I tried to be careful but I wasn't aware that the rope went under the boat and went forward the boat turns off. That really was a bummer.
One thing you can use in the future is one of the rope floats. You may have seen them at the pool before they are used to seporate the shallow end from the deep end. You can slide that over your rope and tie a knot close to the back of your boat and another knot just on the backside. This will keep your rope above the water for you. simple and cheap. here is link just to make sure I was clear.

I HAVE PUT A FLOATING DEVICE FROM A SURF CAR RACK PROTECTOR AND IS FLOATING 25INCHES LONG BEHIND THE DECK (THE ROPE IS CAME INSIDE).MAYBE YOU CAN FIND ALSO FROM THE FLOATING TUBES THAT USUALLY USE FOR KID TRAINING IN SWIMMING POOLS.
I HAVE ALWAYS WITH ME A MASK A SUBMERSIBLE VERY SMALL MAGLITE(YOU CAN KEEP WITH YOUR TEETHS)BECAUSE IS DARK UNDERSIDE AND A SHARP KNIFE TO GO UNDER THE BOAT AND TO CUT THE ROPE .
