Hello all,

I have a question about swapping engines.

A few days ago I was given a 2001 Sea-Doo Utopia 185 along with the trailer. Both are in very good condition however the boat has been sitting for 5 years. As a result there was a hole about twice the size of a 50 cent piece in the custom cover between the front and rear seats and rain water has been going into the boat.

Most of it had drained but the drain plugs were partitally stopped up. As a result some water was sitting inside the boat which has caused the seats etc. to mold but that will be easy enough to clean. Outside of that the interior is in very good shape. There are no tears, holes etc. and the Bimini Top is perfect. The hull is in great shape as well.

However, the engine may be another story. It's a 210 M2 and it may be locked up. I have a good friend who spent 22 years in the U.S. Coast Guard as an engine mechanic who kept boats and ships of all sizes and with all types of engines running those 22 years. He's coming over this weekend to take a look at the engine to see what can be done, to determine if it is locked up, if it can be rebuilt and if it would be worth rebuilding the engine if need be etc.

Nevertheless my question is this... if I wind up having to go with a remanufactured engine, which might be the easiest path to take, I was wondering if I can swap the 210 M2 with the 200 HP fuel injected engine? From what I've read the fuel injected engines get 50% plus better fuel economy than the ones with carburetors. If that's the case and I do wind up having to replace the engine I'd be crazy not to go that route if possible plus I don't think 10 HP will make that big of a difference.

If it is possible to swap the engines how much trouble are we going to run into? Does the 200 mount like the 210? If not what would have to be done? An adaptor plate of some type maybe or would the 240 HP fuel injected be a better choice?

I've never had a boat like this so any information, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also can anyone recommend a reputable dealer for remanufactured engines?

Just guerssing here but,

Fitting the engine probably won't be the issue. It will be the electronics to conrol the fuel injection.

I don't know how hard it would be, but you may need to get a "brain box" from another fuel injected Seadoo. I think they are MPEMS, but I don't know how easy swapping would be.

Thanks for the reply jonw9... I'll try to find out more about the electronics issue and the brain box.

Derrick, my friend who was in the Coast Guard I mentioned above will probably be here today to look at the engine. He'll be able to tell me more about the engine, it's condition, if it's going to run, needs to be rebuilt etc.
