So in our case we go Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day weekend, there are plenty of days that the weather is nice enough to put in outside that time frame I just don't want to risk with the way the lake levels fluctuate.

I would say it is how much you can tolerate without getting too cold while driving. We usually don't put our boat in after Labor Day weekend, this is really not because it is too cold but because we don't have enough water in the lake to be safe. We boat on Allatoona Lake and they start letting the water out right around Labor Day every year and then it starts coming back up in Mid-March. Our first good day out is usually Memorial Day weekend.

yeah Allatoona is just as bad as Lanier; I believe that Lanier is stil 14ft below full pool; at least Allatooa had water last summer. This is why I go to Oconee it might be a little longer drive but there is always water; (lake ownerd by GA Power, not Army Corps of Engineers)

We go to Oconee from time to time since we have friends that live on the lake; there are a few pictures in the gallery. Typically we stay down for the weekend since it is quite a drive just for a day of boating.
yeah my parents have a place on the northern part of oconee and that is actualy where i am storing my boat right now. the northern part of the lake is nice because most day boaters (other then fishermen) don't venuture that far north becuase you really have to know the channels so that you don't hit any trees

A few years back, we were visiting Las Vegas with friends. We decided to rent a boat and go out on Lake Mead. It was probably 70's out and in March. The lake was deserted!!! There were maybe 2 or 3 boats out. We spoke to the conservation police officer on the water and she explained that the locals thinks it is too cold to be out. It was a great day out on the water! We wished we had left earlier so we could have explored the Colorado river...
yeah it is so much fun to be out on a diserted lake; i work a second shift job so I enjoy going to the lake early in the morning during the week in the summer and spending a couple hours out on the water all alone; very piecefull
