I have a 2001 utopia 185 w/ a 240 EFI engine that I've had since new. One thing I can't stand about it is that it is so loud at idle and at headway speeds, that conversations are like shouting matches. It seems much louder that other 205 utopias that I've heard.
Is there something wrong with my boat? Are there any aftermarket mufflers or silencers that I could add?
Thanks,
Dean
Why is the motor so loud?

Our 240 EFI in our 160 Speedster was very loud too, I think it is just the nature of these engines. The new Utopias have the Rotax engines in them so they are much quieter.
There has been talk on the forums about doing things to engine compartment to to reduce noise but I don't think anyone has come up with a recommended or viable solution. The risk is with the material you use to dampen the noise would pose a fire risk being so close to the engine.

Dean, the bad news is that you already have mufflers! You think yours is loud, the Sugar Sand Mirage with the 175 HP engine holds the record! It had the 2.4 litre engine like yours only without mufflers! At least it was relatively quiet at idle but once it got on plane it sounded like an airplane at takeoff. The Yamaha is better but due to the excessive RPMs they turn they are loud too. There is a rumor that the Sugar Sand Tango and Sting will be back with Honda engines or maybe new Mercury 4 strokes. I assume they will be quiet, probably not as quiet as Sea Doo but a vast improvement from the older Mercury engines.

I am in the middle of replacing the noise supressing foam in my 2005 Utopia with the 240EFI
I bought the best yacht sound supressing foam you can buy and it is heavy.
I am figuring it is 10 times better than the OEM foam that the aluminum foil peeled off of and the foam balled up before your eyes.
If anyone is interested I will let you know how it turns out when I take it out this weekend.
I sure hope it helps as it was a tremendous amount of work to strip the old foam and replace it with new.
Cost was about $300 for the foam alone 3 sheets (54x24) the main work is taking the old stuff off.

Dean - take a look at these pictures, this should give you a good idea of what you need to do. You can order this sound insulation in sheets online.
