I'm interested in purchasing a 2002 SeaDoo Utopia 185 with 200HP motor. The only thing I saw are pictures. 10 hour drive to view it..Seller purchased it at auction so no history on it. The upholstery was redone on the back because of sun damage. Asking $12000 Cdn. Should a good compression test be between 125-140 on all? What else should I be concerned about? Are there recalls on these boats? Thanks.

We just had a 2001 Utopia 185 leave here that sold for $11,000. It was a verified boat, i.e. we sold it new and have done all of the maintenance. The things usually needing work are the starter, alternator, primary fuel pump, and spark plugs not to mention the fuel filter and final drive oil. You are taking a pretty big gamble if you don't know the history. The boat could easily cost $1,800 or so if you need some of these things done. Do you know how old the fuel is? Optimax engines require good clean fuel, an excellent charging system, and all three fuel pumps working well.

Thanks for the reply. I will be test driving it and have it inspected before I purchase it. Thanks again for noting all the potential problems I could encounter when buying used boat. I'll keep you posted as to what takes place.
