Hi everyone! Just wondering if its illegal to add gas at the docks with 5gal cans?? Or do you have to be at an approved filling station? Last weekend came to the dock all I could smell was gas!!! Looked over Guy using 5gal can. Loaded the Doo and another guy with 5 -5gal can in his trunk of car. Theses cans leak if not new or properly maintained! Thanks!

I wouldn't think it is illegal, but it definitely doesn't sound like the smartest thing to do. I have a friend who uses this, http://www.cabelas.c...p;cm_ite=netcon, to store his gas so that he can fill up on this dock. A little expensive but much safter!

Thanks Kevin for that link! If the people were using those approved types of cans it wouldnt been a problem for me. Just thought that he was putting my family and other boaters at risk. As someone could be smoking.

At our marina we do not allow the use of "independent" fueling. It is illegal to spill fuel, thats federal law. We had a person such as you were describing Dale, the Coast Guard ended up fining him $2,500.00. The initial fine started at $250,000.00. So the bottom line is, the problem is not how the boat's tank is filled, it is the second a drop of gas hits the navigable water that the illegal stuff starts!
