Looking for a little advice here. I was working on the back of my boat the other day and saw something white up in the pump area . I got a flashlight to check it out and found a golfball size chunk of rock wedged in the back of my Stator assembly. Long story short, I was able to wedge the rock out the back with some finesse without taking anything apart. Upon further inspection I saw that the front of the fins on the stator were dinged up a bit, with only one pretty badly damaged . Checking down below I found part of my problem was that one of the tines on the intake grate was broken off almost all the way, which allowed me to suck up some things while I was idling close to the beach. What should I do about both of my problems? Is the stator ok? I saw another forum from PWCToday.com talking about grate options, but I think they were for a different model boat, and I not sure if they would work with my boat. They don't look like they flex in like the hydrosurge does. Can I use just a fixed grate system? Is there really any drawback to having such a thing? These damn parts are expensive, so I want to replace as little as possible , but if not doing so is going to cause more issues in the near future then I wanna take care of that now.

If the tines are broken then I would say you are probably going to be better off replacing the grate because if you were able to suck up something this time then most likely it will happen again. It might be better to invest the money now instead of causing more damage and costing more money in the long run. Take it to your local dealer, have them look at the damage and give you quote on what the repair costs might be.

Yeah, I kinda planned on replacing the grate at a minimum, or could it be repaired? Also, are there fixed grates that you know of? I found the inlet grate assembly for $212 which I guess is not too bad, but if I could get one of those 11 tine stainless steal ones that are fixed I might prefer that instead of the hydrosurge one.

Yes, here's some advice: Don't replace your broken HydroSurge with another HydroSurge! That's what caused the problem in the first place. Get the 11 tine fixed stainless grate (preferred) or the six tine fixed aluminum grate (acceptable) and throw that HydroSurge far, far away.

You will have reduced performance if the damage to your impeller, wear ring, and/or stator is too severe. Dings and dents will cause turbulence and possibly even cavitation, both of which rob performance. Cavitation can cause further damage to the impeller, wear ring, and/or stator too.

You are the latest in a long series of victims of the awful, terrible, worthless HydroSurge intake grate. On an otherwise excellent engine and jetdrive the HydroSurge is an abomination. It's unfortunate that you didn't hear about it before damage occurred, but now at least learn from the experience and get rid of it as soon as possible. I would not put the boat in the water before replacing it.

Did you purchase a replacement intake grate? I am wanting to replace my Hydrosurge before I suffer the same consequences. I am just curious where to find this item for my 02 Challenger X-20.

Here is my new intake grate beside the old one. You can see on the black tines where they were starting to wear, making them weaker and more likely to break off.

I ordered the same intake grate as STEPHEN X-20 from marinepartsplus.com for $188.92 with FREE shipping!! For me it ended up being cheaper than boats.net due to the shipping charges. I received the grate very quickly, much quicker than I thought I would, and the service and responses were very good.

Thought I'd provide another alternative for anyone else who has the dreaded hydrosurge grate and needs to find a replacement.

so I also ordered the new stainless steel grate that you all have purchased since one of my tines is broken at the halfway point. Is it as easy as unscrewing the old one and screwing on the new one?

yes, it was! I did it this weekend. 2 bolts, 2 screws off, old grate off, new grate on, 2 bolts, 2 screws back on.
