I have seen lots of fuel gauges quit working due to a bad fuse in the fuel baffle, the bad thing about this is the fuse is not easy to replace so typically the whole baffle is replaced.

Like you said I would check wires first. Next check the fuses, typically if it is a fuse it will be completely gone though. Let us know what you find.

Does anyone know how the tach works. There is one gray wire and I have all manuals for the motor and boat but can not find any info on the tach. My 2001 challenger 2000 with 240 m2 motor tach does not work. I believe it gets the voltage from one of the rectifiers but can not verify in the manuals. Anyone run into this before and any ideas? Thanks. All other guages working. Also main problem is that battery dies. When motor is running I only get 12.3 volts across the battery not the 14 that I read I should be reading and I am thinking maybe since the tach is not running they are related somehow?

The standard tach colors are : the blue wire is for gauge illumination, black is ground, grey is the tach signal (runs to the voltage regulator), and purple is 12volts to power the guage.
