I recently bought a 96 speedster with twin 85 rotax engines. I have two questions: The guy I got it from gave me a ride before I payed him.(actually, he scared the crap out of me). It spit water out of the big purple thing that circles up and around the motor. it kinda looked like it was coming out of a freeze plug or something. he said it was normal and to just put some caulking on it. is that true?
when it is first started, it smokes like a freight train! it stops after a few minutes, but is it normal for a large amount of smoke to pour out like that?
smoke after start-up?

The smoke is normal. The engines are 2 strokes. As to the water spraying, thats not too good. I'm not for certian here but the purple thing you may be referring to is the exhaust. If it's leaking like you say then you'll have a lot of the exhaust in that engine area. I've got a 96 speedster as well, but i haven't messed w/ the engine in a while. I store it at my parents and I live an hour away.

Hirvy is correct- smoke on startup on that year model or any other 2 stroke is normal. On yours, heavy smoke that goes away after warmup is a sign that the crankshaft seals inside the engine are worn out. Deal with it or spring for a rebuild.
What isn't normal is the water from the tuned pipe. There are plugs in that pipe that do corrode and eventually start leaking. There is a fix, especially if you know a good welder-
