been a while since i've posted (too busy having fun on the challenger), logged about 500 miles on the trailer last weekend.

anyway, i have this idea to somehow mount a bbq on board.

i was initially thinking of drilling a rod holder into the hull, but a marine mechanic friend of mine said ABSOLUTELY not. he gave me the reasons why, but i am still not 100% sure about his response.

basically, i want to get a cheap filet table, and then place a cheap (20 bucks) camping style flat bbq with propane tank on top and cook.

the filet table needs to be mounted inside of a rod holder, and the cheap-o bbq can be tossed in the garbage when it gets dirty.

i thought this was better (i saw it done on a buddy's center console boat) than buying the $250 stainlessbqq at west marine. the expensive bbq still needs a rod holder mounting set up installed.

No need to drill a rod holder. Magma BBQ;s have a small mount base that you attach the BBQ to. You leave the base (3 screws only, about 1 inch high), and dismount the BBQ when under way. See the mount on the port side, front, between the cupholder and the glass?

I would advise AGAINST any fires in on or very close to the boat. There's just too much plastic, vinyl uphostery, and gasoline. I'm on my 3rd Seadoo (a Speedster 200) and also have a Catalina 22. We entertain and eat quite a bit on the boats - and camp out on islands. But we only eat prepared food on the boats. I saw a sailboat go up in flames a few years ago on a lake in upstate NY, and that made me a believer.

i fiited a rod holder to my doo - just on the port side gunwale - no problems - it was only a 1.5 inch hole - wouldnt of thought that would weaken the glass as there is a 3 inch hole about 2 feet away for cups!

i chose this type as it spins around and can be angled etc - you can even rest the rod inside the boat in the holder whilst underway if you want to drive to a new area etc - the standard in hull holders look better but you really need to put them in a fairly thick transon or gunwale at the rear of the boat and we dont have either on the sportster, the rod holder doubles up quite nicely to support the girlies sunbrella on lazy days!
