I just purchased a 230 challenger se High Output with 25 hrs. I had a mechanic check over the engine and evreything was fine. On the third time out with the boat the hot engine alarm came on and some smoke came from the engine when I lifted the cover. When the alarm sounded I immediately shut off the engine.

 

Question: What would be a possible cause of the engine overheating and did I do permanent damage? I've been told the fix could be as simple as removing weeks stuck in the impellar intake.

How old is the boat. 25 hrs sounds new.  If it is under warranty, go to the dealer.  

Were the superchargers re-built?

How is the coolant level?

How is the oil level? This could be a bad thing.

Any extra fluids in the engine room?

 

If you shut it down immediately, there may be no damage. Of course, there may be lots of damage that caused the overheating. 

Could be a bad thermostat.

Was the smoke coming off the exhaust and muffler or the engine?

Could be the exhaust cooling port is clogged in the impeller intake on that engine or a hose came off.

 The impeller pushes some water to cool the exhaust while it is running. Maybe you could disconnect the hose on that engine and blow it out.  

 

I get lots of vibration when things get stuck on/in the impeller. 

 

The engine has a closed loop cooling like a car. The radiator is a rectangular gray metal piece on the bottom of the hull. Check for leaks/holes if coolant level is low.

 

My boat, 2008 230 SE 430HP, showed overheating once, but mine wasn't smoking. It turned out to be a bad battery. Electronic things are unpredictable when they don't get the correct voltage.

and the answer is ....

 

the impeller intake got cloged which caused the exhaust port to over heat because the water wasn't there. Realized the problem after i pulled out two clumps of weeks stuck in each impeller intake port. The smoke that I saw was the 15" dia hose connected to the exhause port that was fring. Did't know this until I pushed the throttle down and head a loud noise like you would normally hear without an engine muffler. I opened the engine cover and noticed water spraying out into the engine where the exhaust hose is connected. I thought at first the clamp came disconnected until a realized that the exhause hose fried due to the hot temp. Part of the fried rubber is still around the circumference of the exhaust port. I will be ordering a new exhaust hose. Should be easy to fix.
