I fitted a depth sounder to a 1996 Sportster that I had. The transducer would be glued to the engine floor (thru hull). For the power, I would rather use direct battery connection with an in line fuse...

I just got this Hummingbird HDR-610, will fit perfectly in the spare instrument hole in my cluster. I would wire it with switched power, where the it only comes on when you install lanyard. Mine is a "in hull" puck transducer and thats what I would suggest you get. You want to install it as far back and as low in the hull as you can, the area that transducer is sending it's sonar single thru needs to always be wetted....which means the further back the better.

i guess you just epoxy resined the transducer to the fibreglass - there ws no thru hull installation ?

Yes. Installed one in Sportster 4tec.
Placed transducer in low spot which always holds water, just forward of the engine. This, after trying to find the thinnest part of the hull to adhere it to without success.
Transducer must always sit in water. Also needed to get a higher quality unit as cheaper one was unreliable.
See my posting on this of last year ( if it still exists ).
Needed to move radio forward to provide clearance for the display unit, then fabricated a small box for sunglasses etc. in former radio space.
Get 12 volts from cigarett lighter outlet or radio.

thanx for tips - whn you say it has to sit in water you mean below the waterline as opposed to water in the bilge??????

I think he's refering to having it placed in the part of the hull that is always in contact with the water. If you mount it too far ahead it will give you false reading when the hull comes up and is not in contact with the water...does that make sense

What I meant was that it must sit IN the ( bilge ) water in a depression in the hull.
That way the signals transmit thru the water, the hull, then to the bottom and back.
Cannot transmit thru air nor thru some adhesives.

I have been thinking of a depth finder for my speedster 200. I was thinking of mounting it in the back of the ski locker. Does this sound like it will work fairly well or would I be wasting my money. I do not want to drill through my hull anywhere so this would be the only way to install one. If you all think it would not work I would just be wasting my money. I would mainly want to use it when going slow up to sandbars and such. Thanks for any help.

thats exactly where i am going to put mine as that part of my boat is always in the water even at full chat - we have lots of sand bars here to negotiate aswell....
